Great Idaho ShakeOut Oct. 18
gives reminder on earthquake preparedness

Idaho's Great ShakeOut on Oct. 18 is another ITD employee safety initiative, designed so that employees can take a few minutes to learn preparedness habits that may avert injury in a tine of crisis.

More than 93,000 Idahoans signed up for The Great Idaho ShakeOut last year, and this year's figures are expected to meet or exceed those numbers.

"We are pleased with the growth in participation for The Great Idaho ShakeOut," said Idaho Office of Emergency Management Director Brad Richy. "Each year more schools, organizations and individuals sign up to Drop, Cover and Hold On! This level of preparedness is critically important in a state with our rate of seismic activity."

Idaho is the 8th-most seismically active state in the country.

Individuals, businesses, organizations, schools, and government agencies can take part in the Great Idaho ShakeOut earthquake drill at 10:18 AM MST on 10/18. The steps are easy to remember: Drop, Cover and Hold On.

After the ground stops shaking, be sure you know how to turn off utilities like natural gas, electricity, and water. Throughout the year, everyone should have emergency supplies of water, food, and necessary equipment so they can survive for at least three days without outside help following a major disaster. Remember to plan for pets, children, and any special needs, including medical conditions.

"it is not important until It is important to you," said ITD Emergency Manager Neal Murphy. "I just help make preparedness important to you."
