D3's Serrano commended for service after crash

In early September, Kathy and Terry Martin sent a letter to Director Brian Ness titled "An Outstanding Employee" in reference to ITD D3 maintenance employee Camilo Serrano.

The Martins were involved in a serious car accident at the comer of Bennett Road and Highway 45 on that particular Thursday morning. ITD's Serrano, who'd recently moved from D6 to D3 as the Marsing Maintenance Foreman, immediately stopped and proceeded to help.

"I cannot praise him highly enough for his professionalism, and even more importantly, his kindness to all five of us who were in the car," the letter said. "Not only did he handle his duties directing traffic, but he made sure we were all unhurt."

"He acted as an incredibly reassuring presence to five very rattled people who emerged relatively unhurt from a totaled, upside down, SUV."

One of those very rattled people was an elderly relative visiting from Missouri.

"He put my 98-year-old aunt in his air-conditioned truck, and checked on her repeatedly," the letter stated.

"I want to commend the Idaho Department of Transportation for having such an outstanding employee on their team. We'll never forget his kindness, and will pay it forward every chance we get."

D3 Operations Manager Michael Garz, Camilo's supervisor, was not surprised.

"Camilo is a dedicated public servant who routinely goes above and beyond. He is a leader in our district and is part of the great work done by our entire Maintenance team."

The Canyon County Sheriff's officer on the scene also said Serrano was an enormous help directing traffic after the incident.
