ITD celebrates essential partnership
with Idaho State Police on 80th anniversary

Once upon a time, the Idaho State Police and Idaho Transportation Department shared the headquarters building in Boise. Even though ISP left for their own facility in the early 90’s, the partnership between the two agencies continues to be a strong one. In fact, ISP is still located within minutes of ITD in many district offices around the state.

In a very real sense the two agencies work hand-in-hand -– ITD builds the roads and bridges for the public, and ISP helps to keep those same roads and bridges safe. That’s a very over-simplified view, but it captures the essential nature of the relationship.

So, it is only fitting that on Feb. 20, when the Idaho State Police marked their 80th anniversary of serving the public, ITD marked the milestone, too, with a special commemorative license plate created for the occasion.

"Idaho State Police is both grateful for and proud of the outstanding working relationships we have with the Idaho Transportation Department throughout our great state," said ISP Director Colonel Kedrick Wills. "We each have our areas of expertise, which for ISP is the safety of transporting goods, services and people on our highways.”

“But we also share another goal - educating the public - and together we're a very strong force.  Another aspect of our outstanding partnership is the great working relationships we have at all levels.  Whether it's a snowplow driver communicating with our troopers out on our roadways or it's at the director-to-director level, we're proud to work with the professionals at ITD."

The ITD Headquarters building opened in 1961, and ISP shared the facility with the department for decades before moving to their own facility in 1994. Only two employees remain at ITD who worked for both agencies – Pat Carr and Rene Becker. A third, Jane Baumann, retired last week.

“We are proud and honored to be a partner with Idaho State Police,” said ITD Chief Deputy Scott Stokes. “We work hand-in-hand to keep our transportation systems safe for our growing state. We extend our most sincere gratitude to the men and women at ISP that devote so much in the service of safety for every Idahoan.”
