Name Description
709.01 Type 1 'D' - Class B with Fugitive Dye Curing Compound

SUBSECTION 709.01 MEMBRANE-FORMING CURING COMPOUND of the ITD Standard Specifications. Meet ASTM C309-03. Provide documentation the concrete curing compound has been evaluated and meets testing specifications though NTPEP, now known as (Product Evaluation and Audit Solutions) prior to QPL evaluation.

709.01 Type 2 - Class B White Pigmented Curing Compound

SUBSECTION 709.01 MEMBRANE-FORMING CURING COMPOUND of the ITD Standard Specifications. Meet ASTM C309. Provide documentation the concrete curing compound has been evaluated and meets testing specifications though NTPEP, now known as (Product Evaluation and Audit Solutions) prior to QPL evaluation.

709.03 Air Entraining Admixtures

SUBSECTION 709.03 AIR ENTRAINING ADMIXTURES of the ITD Standard Specifications. Meet AASHTO M154 (ASTM C260). Chemical added to the concrete during the batching process. Air Entrainment creates stable, uniform air voids (spheres) in concrete, reducing damage from (expanding and contracting) during freeze-thaw cycles which reduces cracking, also reduces bleeding and segregation during placement.

709.04 Set Retarding Admixtures

SUBSECTION 709.04 SET RETARDING ADMIXTURES of the ITD Standard Specifications. See 2025 Supplementals Meet ASTM C494. Type A - G. Liquids, added to the concrete during the batching process. Retarders are admixtures used to slow down the hydration process of concrete, thereby extending the setting time for various applications and hot weather concreting. Type "S" admixtures must be approved by the Engineer prior to use.

709.05 Type C - Accelerating Admixtures

ASTM C494 Type C. Chemical added during batching of the concrete to shorten the setting time and speed up early strength development. Perfect for emergency repairs for traffic readiness. Accelerating concrete setting time benefits - scheduling flexibility, early strength during cold weather and for fast-paced projects.

709.05 Type D - Water Reducing and Retarding Admixtures

SUBSECTION 709.05 Water Reducing Admixtures and 709.04 Set Retarding Admixtures. ASTM C494 Type D. Chemical designed for introduction to concrete during the batching process, reducing the amount of mixing water required to produce concrete of a given slump, therefore increasing strength while delaying the chemical reaction (hydration), which increases the setting time during placement and finishing during hot weather or for long transport times, or long placement times ex. (drilled shafts).

709.05 Type E - Water Reducing and Accelerating Admixtures

SUBSECTION 709.05 Water Reducing Admixtures. ASTM C494 Type E. Chemical designed for introduction to concrete during the batching process, reduces the quantity of mixing water required to produce concrete of a given slump, therefore, increasing strength, reducing setting time and increasing rate of early-age strength development.

709.05 Type F - Water Reducing, High Range Admixtures

SUBSECTION 709.05 Water Reducing Admixtures. ASTM C494 Type F. Chemical added to concrete during the batching process to lower the water content by 12% to 30% while maintaining high workability and flow. Lowering the W/C ratio, resulting in a much stronger concrete. Mix is fluid enough for Self-Consolidating Concrete or tight placements.

709.05 Water Reducing Admixtures

SUBSECTION 709.05 WATER REDUCING ADMIXTURES of the ITD Standard Specifications. Meet ASTM C494. Type A. Liquids, added to the concrete during the batching process. Water Reducing Admixture reduces the quantity of water required to produce concrete of a given slump, increasing strength by reducing the W/C Ratio. It also adds to workability for placing and finishing the concrete, by increasing the slump without the addition of water.

709.06 Type S - Specific Performance (Lithium Nitrate Admixtures)

SUBSECTION 709.06 LITHIUM NITRATE ADMIXTURES (Type S) of the ITD Standard Specifications. Meet ASTM C494. This admixture is a Specific Performance Admixture, designed to mitigate Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) in concrete. It's typically a 30% aqueous solution of Lithium Nitrate and is added to the concrete during the batching process. This admixture helps prevent or minimize expansion and cracking caused by Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR,) particularly when using reactive aggregates.
