Employees asked to complete commuting log

Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter has directed state employees to participate in a Trip Reduction Employee Survey that documents how they commute to work and their efforts to reduce travel or find alternative transportation.

A survey form should have been distributed earlier this week that replaces one sent out earlier. Employees should complete the form that addresses their commutes during the period of June 15-28. Completed tracking forms should be sent to your respective administrative assistant by Tuesday (July 1). Employees who completed the earlier form can submit it instead of the new version.

Administrative assistants will collect the tracking forms and complete the summary. Those summaries should be forwarded to Lisa Josleyn, in the Division of Transportation Planning and Programming by Wednesday (July 3). Please contact Patti Raino at Pat.Raino@itd.idaho.gov or call her at ext. 8209.

"On various occasions over the last several months I have mentioned to all of you my goal of finding better and more efficient ways to provide state government services to Idaho’s citizens,” Otter said in a May memo to agency directors. “As a matter of fact, many of your agencies have been developing some of the plans and policies necessary for state government to take steps to provide services more efficiently to the public. All these efforts are coming together at a critical time – particularly in the Treasure Valley, where the vast majority of our state employees live and work and where greater efficiency can do the most good.

“I appreciate the effort that everyone has put forward so far in developing action plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, encouraging alternative means of transportation, and identifying ways to improve our energy efficiency through trip reduction strategies.”

To help determine the effectiveness of those efforts, the governor asked agencies to administer a trip reduction/alternative commuting survey. He wants to know how many state employees are already engaged in a form of telecommuting or using alternative work schedules. He also invites feedback on how well the telecommuting guidelines and policy are working and what changes might be considered.

“Goals and achievable levels of participation will vary by agency, but it is my hope that this initial period of assessment will help us set attainable goals for state government as a whole,” Otter said.
