Resurfacing project planned for Cloverdale bridge over I-84

The first major resurfacing of the Cloverdale Overpass Bridge deck since its construction nearly 45 years ago will take place in July. The bridge spans Interstate 84 in Boise.

The resurfacing project is scheduled around the close of Spalding Elementary School for summer vacation. The school is located at the base of the bridge on the north side.

The project on the Cloverdale Bridge (built in 1966) is expected to be completed by the end of July. Similar to the Five Mile Bridge project two summers ago, the Cloverdale project will be completed quickly but will require a complete closure of the route over I-84. The closure will begin immediately after the Fourth of July holiday.

Work involves grinding the existing surface, repairing any scarring or deterioration around the reinforcing steel and removing any old patches. The deck will be repaved with concrete including a micro-silica additive that produces a more dense mixture that is more resistant to normal traffic wear.

In addition to the resurfacing, the approaches to the bridge will be rebuilt and paved for about 50 feet to create a smooth transition to Cloverdale Road.

In 2007, two exterior bridge girders over the eastbound lanes of I-84 were replaced after an over-height truck hit the bridge the previous July. Approximately 12,000 vehicles per day pass over the bridge. By 2030, the traffic count is expected reach 20,000 vehicles per day.
