ITD presents annual report, FY 2010 request to Legislators

ITD director Pam Lowe and the department’s executive team presented the  annual report and Fiscal Year 2010 budget proposal to the Legislature’s House and Senate transportation committees on Jan. 22. Each of ITD’s division administrators gave reports accompanied by a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation and video display.

Special Olympics

ITD helps ensure safe routes for World Winter Games

Moving 2,500 Special Olympics athletes, coaches, family, friends and spectators around the Treasure Valley and state for a week takes a monumental effort. Representatives from a number of groups met several times since early last summer to identify the best travel routes for the Olympic athletes and to enhance communication during the event to ensure the safety of participants, their families and volunteers.

Board considers report on management systems

Acquiring a maintenance management system to help plan highway maintenance activities should be a top priority for improving efficiency, according to a report recently presented to the Idaho Transportation Board. Research Program Manager Ned Parrish presented the draft final report on the evaluation of ITD’s needs for maintenance management and pavement management software tools to board members on Jan. 22.

Highways
Weiser bridge about 6 months ahead of schedule

District 3 first reported a few months ago on the project to replace a bridge on U.S. 95 over the Snake River in Weiser – a crossing that has been in place since the original bridge was built in 1903. Following that, an additional span was added in 1911, and traffic signals came in 1949. In the 1950s, the bridge was replaced. By this fall, a new structure will connect Annex, Ore., to Weiser.

Idaho RWIS system featured in corporate magazine
Faced with limited budgets in an economic crisis, today’s winter road maintainers are being tasked with providing higher levels of service and road safety for the same or less cost. In this challenging operational landscape, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has emerged as a prime example of how to accomplish that goal using a cost-effective, non-invasive Road Weather Information System (RWIS).

Rules of the road, as viewed in 1920s
Someday ordinances on the books for 2009 might appear archaic to folks who find them in old books - just as the rules from the 1920s discovered recently in an old audit report are amusing now. A family member recently gave Fremont County Clerk Abbie Mace a booklet labeled "Financial Report Fremont County, Idaho" and dated from Jan. 10, 1899, to Jan. 10, 1907. Mace also found a 4-inch-by-5-inch card inside the book. The card is titled "Traffic Rules for St. Anthony, Idaho..."

New Web site focuses on eight-state corridor

A new Web site has been launched - www.i90i94travelinfo.com - to help travelers gather information about Interstates 90 and 94 between the states of Wisconsin and Washington, including a segment in northern Idaho. Interstates 90 and 94 function as major corridors for commercial and recreational travel in Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Institute predicts rise in number of uninsured drivers

Approximately one in six drivers across the United States may be driving uninsured by 2010, according to a recent study from Insurance Research Council (IRC). The report estimated that 9 percent of Idaho drivers will be operating without insurance, ranking the state in a tie for 36th, nationally.

Special Olympics

Idaho prepares for World Winter Games
Athletes from 110 countries will descend upon Idaho in about two weeks for the largest multi-day event ever held in the state. Athletes will be participating in a variety of competitions for the Special Olympics World Winter Games. Venues include Bogus Basin Ski Resort near Boise; Sun Valley; Ponderosa State Park (McCall); and Qwest Arena and the Boise Centre on the Grove in Boise.
