Allen
named Roadway Design Engineer
The past seven years Damon Allen has steadily advanced
to positions of new responsibility in District 3.
In the coming weeks, he will sep out of the district
and become the transportation department’s new
Roadway Design Engineer, succeeding Loren Thomas who
was promoted to Assistant Chief Engineer.

Jennings to guide Office of Traffic and Highway
Safety
Brent
Jennings will return to the place where he began
his ITD career after recently accepting a promotion
to Traffic and Highway Safety Engineer. He replaces
Lance Johnson who accepted a position with the Federal
Highway Administration late last year.

to welcome WASHTO conference
Transportation officials from throughout the western
U.S. will meet in Boise March 27-30 for an annual
WASHTO (Western Association of State Highway Transportation
Officials) conference, hosted by the Idaho Transportation
Department. The three-day conference will be at
the Grove Hotel and features presentations on highway
construction methods and materials.

joins national seat belt campaign
ITD's Office of Traffic and Highway Safety is working
to help reduce the number of needless injuries to
children because of automobile crashes every year.
Children ages 4 to 8 who use booster seats are 59
percent less likely to be injured in a car crash
than children who are restrained only by a safety
belt

chapter schedules luncheon
Boise State University President, Robert W. Kustra
to Speak at Engineer Week Luncheon The Southwest
Chapter of the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers
will play host to an Engineer’s Week Luncheon
Tuesday, Feb. 21, in conjunction with National Engineers
Week. The luncheon will be at the Doubletree Riverside
Inn, 2900 Chinden Blvd., Boise, beginning at 11:30
a.m.

U.S.
Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta this week
unveiled a $65.6 billion Fiscal Year 2007 budget
request that provides record investments for new
highway, transit and safety programs, explores new
ways to fund transportation projects over the long
term and provides funds to encourage continued Amtrak
reform.

Federal earmarks have
proven beneficial

Unfortunately, as you may know, some unscrupulous
members of Congress have used the awarding of appropriations
“earmarks” as a means of enriching themselves
and their families at the expense of taxpayers.
That’s wrong, it’s against the law,
and they will be going to jail for their transgressions.
In order to prevent these abuses from resurfacing,
some members of Congress have called for an end
to earmarking or extreme new restrictions on the
practice.
