JFAC
approves budget request;
scales back GARVEE proposal
I wanted to update you
on the events in JFAC yesterday with respect
to ITD’s budget request. JFAC considered
the budget proposal in two parts. The first
was our request for $501 million to operate
the department and fund our highway investment,
public transportation, and aeronautics programs.
The second was our proposal of authority
for $218 million in GARVEE Bonding for the
Connecting Idaho Initiative.

Board
to receive report on enhancement program
ITD staff will provide a historic overview of the
federal Transportation Enhancement Program to board
members when they assemble for their monthly meeting
next week in Boise. The enhancement program is designed
to preserve and create more livable communities
where roads blend with the natural, social and cultural
environment, or to “enhance” the transportation
experience.

Engineers encouraged to develop 'breadth' as well
as 'depth'
Chief
engineer Steve Hutchinson knows there is a tsunami
building on the distant horizon – a time within
about a decade when a major retirement wave will
reach ITD shores. The department needs to aggressively
recruit, retain and prepare qualified engineers
to fill the retirement void.

Eagle
Road meeting outlines improvement project
About 50 citizens turned out for a public meeting
Tuesday to learn about the first major improvement
for the Eagle Road Improvement Project. Beginning
Thursday (March 16) northbound Eagle Road will be
widened to three lanes between Interstate 84 and
Franklin Road, improving traffic flow and safety
on Idaho’s busiest non-interstate highway.

New
Basque license plate available
A new license plate that will honor Idaho's Basque
heritage and raise funds for the Cenarrusa Center
for Basque Studies is available at county auto licensing
offices throughout Idaho. The plate features a camp/sheep
wagon. The first Basque immigrant sheepherders lived
in camp wagons during their long stays in Idaho's
mountains. The lower center of the plate reads “Basque.”

to present employee service awards
The Idaho Transportation Board will focus its attention
on 74 individuals who have reached new milestones
in their careers at the transportation department
Thursday during the second of a two-day board meeting
in Boise. Among the honored employees are two individuals
– Sherwin Beaman and Milford Miller –
who have logged more than 40 years with the department.

recent retirees to be honored
Seven
ITD employees who brought long and distinguished
careers to a close in the last half of 2005 (July
through December) will be honored Thursday during
the semiannual service awards ceremony at Headquarters
in Boise Combined, they represented nearly two centuries
(197 years) of experience, wisdom and service

Interstate
construction tested engineers

As the U.S. Interstate Highway System was taking
shape, state highway agencies charged with building
it faced an immense challenge. If the system was
to last longer than previous American highways,
transportation officials found they needed solid
facts and figures on performance and behavior of
pavement structures to guide them in designing and
building the largest public works project in U.S.
history.
