Mourning the loss of Jim Onthank and Toby Stevens
ITD employees who regularly drive Idaho’s highways as part of their job to ensure safe public travel do so at considerable personal risk. Bad weather... Road hazards... Impatient drivers... Split-second decisions... They are ever-present dangers.

In memory of James W. Onthank
James W. Onthank of Grangeville died March 15, 2005 at the age of 42 in a work-related automobile accident on Highway 95. Also killed in the accident was Toby Stevens.
Jim is survived by his wife, Cynthia D. Onthank, 42, also of Grangeville; and his two sons, Kirt L. Onthank, 22, his wife Stephanie J. Onthank, 24, of College Place, Wash., Cody J. Onthank, 19, his wife, Falina F. Onthank, 22; and Jim's first grandson, Caleb Josiah Onthank, 16 months, of Walla Walla, Wash. He also is survived by parents, Samuel and Katherine Onthank of Clarkston, Wash., and siblings, Michael, Scott and Kelly.

In memory of Toby Joe Stevens
Toby Joe Stevens, loving husband, brother, son and friend, lost his life Tuesday, March 15, 2005. Toby was born in Loyalton, Calif., in 1962 where he lived until 2003. Toby spent many years working in the woods, beginning in 1977 when he was 15 years old. He operated heavy equipment for the family logging business. Toby moved to Paradise, Calif., where he met and married Juli; they moved back to Loyalton.

Aeronautics festival soars to new heights

A helicopter landing on 9th street, flight control simulators and pop bottle rockets were among the highlights of the 13th annual Idaho Aviation Festival in Boise (March 10-12). The festival attracted more than 600 people who came to learn about aerospace technology, industry trends and to earn pilot safety certifications.

Private colleges, universities granted special plates
Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne signed a new specialty license plate bill into law during a ceremony at Albertson College of Idaho in Caldwell Thursday (March 17). It was one of four bills involving license plates introduced into the Idaho legislature this session. The new law expands Idaho’s specialty license plate program to include private schools – Albertson College, Northwest Nazarene University and Brigham Young University-Idaho.

Highway updates move to twice daily
Motorists can get road condition updates twice daily by calling the Idaho Road Report, the Idaho Transportation Department announced. Beginning today, the updates will be made at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. This reflects a change from the winter schedule of four daily updates.

U.S. 95 project to begin next week
Motorists who regularly travel between Moscow and Lewiston will be able to chronicle the development of a new highway without leaving their car or adding to their commute. Construction on what will become new northbound lanes of a four-lane divided U.S. 95 is expected to begin next week. The new lanes will be constructed as separate but contiguous projects.
