state to give collective thanks to employees
State
employees from Bonners Ferry to Preston and every
community between and many workstations lying found
outside incorporated communities will be honored
for their public service next week. Idaho elected
officials and department administrators will collectively
express their appreciation during the 2005 Employee
Recognition Week. The celebration will be as diverse
as the workforce.

Survey
reveals Idahoans' perception of transportation
Idaho
Transportation Board members learned about the perceptions
and priorities of Idahoans who use the transportation
system during a report last week on the Idaho Traveler
Opinion and Perception Survey. Findings of the extensive
study were presented at the April board meeting
held in Pocatello, April 21-22.

new breed of 'litter' patrol
An Adopt-A-Highway group
from Filer has added new meaning to highway “litter”
patrol. Members of the National Honor Society at Filer
School found an abandoned kitten during one of their
semi-annual highway cleanups. The last of the litter
was offered a new home and a new start on life when
one of the participating students adopted the feline.

Cinco de Mayo sensibly
As
part of a nationwide effort, the Idaho Transportation
Department joins the Idaho Commission on Hispanic
Affairs, law enforcement officials and other safety
partners to remind motorists to designate a sober
driver before attending Cinco de Mayo festivities
that involve alcohol.

is good time to try alternative commutes
ITD employees
in the Treasure Valley have an opportunity
to make an impact on the region’s
livability, improve air quality and reduce
the anxiety of daily commutes by participating
in May in Motion. The annual event, presented
by Commuteride and the Ada County Highway
District, emphasizes the need for transportation
alternatives.

Teens
invited to fly high at ACE academy
Navigating
small airplanes, launching a near-earth
satellite balloon and exploring Blackhawk
helicopters are all part of the Aviation
Career Education (ACE) Academy, June 27-30.
The academy is hosted by the Idaho Transportation
Department’s Division of Aeronautics.
Thirty teens will have the opportunity
to participate in the academy, which is
open to high school students ages 14-18.
Students must submit an application by
May 30.

enrollment for insurance is May 9-25
The open enrollment
period for employee health coverage –
medical dental and flexible spending account
– begins Monday, May 9 and continues
through Thursday, May 25. During the open
enrollment period, employees may change
their plan preferences (PPO or traditional)
or deduction options. Human Resource Services
will provide more information next week.

chemical-powered 'car' wins regional event
University
of Idaho chemical engineering students continue the
College of Engineering tradition to pave the way in
innovation with vehicles and fuels. UI's 2005 Chem-E-Car
team took first place at the American Institute of
Chemical Engineers Pacific Northwest Regional Conference
in Corvallis, Ore. April 23.

Studded
tires to be retired before Saturday
State
law requires studded snow tires be removed
by April 30, the Idaho Transportation Department
announced. Idaho’s studded snow tire
season began Oct. 1. Studded tires are snow
tires with small metal cleats embedded in
the tread. They may cause undue wear on
bare roadways.
