express RL-ID concerns to Homeland Security director

Some of you might be familiar with my serious concerns
about the REAL ID Act. As the potential expense
and disruption of this federal mandate approaches,
it’s important that all Idahoans be aware
of how our state government is approaching the issue.
Below is the pertinent text from a letter I sent
this week (May 4) to Homeland Security Secretary
Michael Chertoff regarding implementation of the
REAL ID Act.

Board
to meet with Mini-Cassia Transportation leaders
The Idaho Transportation
Board will precede its monthly business meeting next
week with an informal breakfast meeting with the Mini-Cassia
Transportation Committee on Wednesday and a firsthand
look at potential District 4 interstate projects.
Wednesday morning’s meeting with the Mini-Cassia
delegation will be in Burley. Board members then will
travel east on I-84 and learn from ITD staff about
future interstate projects

Teens
to learn aviation from ground up
Navigating
small airplanes, launching a near-earth satellite
balloon and exploring Blackhawk helicopters are all
part of the Aviation Career Exploration (ACE) Academy,
June 25-28. The academy is hosted by the Idaho Transportation
Department’s Division of Aeronautics. Thirty
teens will have the opportunity to participate in
the academy, which is open to high school students
ages 14-18. Students must submit an application by
May 30.

garners six Idaho Press Club awards
ITD received six publications
awards – a first place, four seconds and an
honorable mention – Saturday (May 5) at the
annual Idaho Press Club banquet in Boise. Mollie McCarty
and Adam Rush earned the top award in the Media Kit
competition for work to inform the news media and
public about rehabilitation of Rainbow Bridge.

New
haven opens for weary I-84 travelers
The Blacks Creek Rest Area reopened Monday, offering
Interstate 84 motorists additional parking, new restrooms,
landscaping, covered picnic areas and lengthened on-
and off-ramps from the interstate. Idaho Transportation
Board Chairman Darrell Manning, contractors, transportation
department employees and members of the Three Island
Crossing Organization gathered for a ribbon cutting
