As
I embark on a new chapter of public service
in my life, I have a deep appreciation and
respect for each of you and your dedicated
service to the citizens of the State of Idaho.
Throughout my two terms as Governor, it has
been my great fortune to work with and enjoy
the support of so many dedicated public servants.
I am proud of what we have accomplished together.

Stepson
of ITD's Joe Peagler honored for bravery
A Darkhorse Marine was decorated with
the nation’s fourth highest award for valor by
the 1st Marine Division commanding general here, May
19. Maj. Gen. Richard Natonski presented the Bronze
Star Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device to 1st
Lt. Alfred L. Butler IV, stepson of ITD's Joe Peagler.
Butler is a Weapons Company executive officer, 3rd Battalion,
5th Marine Regiment.

Board
revises STIP to pass through funds for Treasure Valley
Transit
The Idaho Transportation
Board last week revised the Statewide Transportation Improvement
Program to provide an additional $156,540 to Treasure
Valley Transit (TVT). The infusion was made possible because
Idaho will receive more public transit revenue than it
projected a year ago.

New e-mail standards to take effect
ITD will implement a number of important changes to employee
use of e-mail, effective next week, to address growing
demand on the system and its storage capacity. A memo
distributed to all ITD employees on April 10 outlined
the changes and reminds employees to use discretion when
sending and receiving e-mail.

District
6 announces Roadeo winners
What do mailboxes,
basketballs, and tennis balls on orange cones have to
do with good driving? They were elements of the obstacle
courses maneuvered by ITD drivers at the District 6 Truck
Roadeo on May 17. A total of 27 drivers who hold current
CDLs competed at the Idaho Falls maintenance facility
in the annual event to see who goes on to the state Roadeo
in June.

Allstate
ranks Boise drivers 18th for safety
Boise drivers ranked a respectable 18th on the list of
200 cities nationwide, logging 11,6 years between crashes,
or 14.1 percent below the national average. Three other
cities also recorded the same number of years between
accidents. Considering their 2004 populations, their comparison
to the national average ranged from 14.2 percent below
to 13.6 percent.

Deadline
for ACE academy is Wednesday
Navigating small airplanes, launching a near-earth satellite
balloon and exploring Blackhawk helicopters will be featured
activities of the Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy,
June 26-29. ITD's Division of Aeronautics is host of the
annual event for teenagers. Thirty teens will have the
opportunity to participate in the academy, which is open
to high school students ages 14-18. Students must submit
an application by Wednesday (May 31).

FHWA
unveils program to promote innovations
FHWA’s Highways for LIFE
program is open for business. The Highways for LIFE (HfL)
implementation plan was issued in the Federal Register
on Thursday (May 25). Highways for LIFE is a pilot program
designed to accelerate the adoption of innovations and
new technologies, thereby improving safety and highway
quality while reducing congestion caused by construction.

interstates to be featured on new Web site
How
well do you know Idaho’s interstate highway system?
Do you know which route is both an interstate and intrastate
highway? Or which two Idaho interstates generally follow
historic routes first used by western settlers. Or how
many miles of interstate highways are located in Idaho.The
answers to those questions and a wealth of other information
about Idaho’s role in the interstate system are
part of a series of new Web pages scheduled for unveiling
on the ITD Internet site next week.
