War is a time of sacrifice, certainly by the soldiers who are fighting the battles and their families left behind, and the rest of the nation as well. Many men and women who are currently deployed are members of our National Guard and Reserve. These individuals have left not only family, but jobs.

Board to consider adopting 30-year vision
The Idaho Transportation Board will be asked next week to endorse a strategy that will help guide transportation initiatives through 2033. Board members will consider adoption of a comprehensive visioning plan, Idaho’s Transportation Future: Getting There Together, that began two years ago and involved a cross-section of Idaho policymakers, transportation leaders and citizens.

McCall residents celebrate their future
McCall residents anticipating a new way to get from east to west – or west to east – paused to celebrate their future Thursday. They gathered to help break ground on construction of the McCall East-West Loop that will provide a new Payette River crossing and local arterial.

Young aviators get taste of the sky
Teens from around Idaho gathered recently at the annual Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy, sponsored by ITD’s Division of Aeronautics. ACE featured astronaut and test pilot Joe Edwards; experts in various aviation-related fields; representatives of regional and national aeronautical schools; and tours of the Boise Airport and the Idaho Air National Guard.

STIP document available for public review
The draft FY 2005-2009 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) is available for public review and comment through August 4, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) announced. The program identifies approximately $1 billion in transportation-related projects planned for construction through the year 2009, plus those in preliminary development.

ITD teams have spent the past eight months developing an Information and Technology Transition Management Plan that will guide the future of the department’s technology programs. The management plan was introduced last week and is available for review on the Intranet.

Strong economy opens door for bonuses to state employees
Idaho's 17,000 regular state employees will get bonus checks averaging a few hundred dollars this summer, thanks to a jump in the economy over the past two months. Legislators promised the across-the-board 1 percent bonus if state taxes came in over the budget, and there should be at least $11 million left at the end of the fiscal year.
