Governor challenges group to view challenge from "30,000" feet
Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter last week challenged members of a new task force to view transportation funding from a statewide perspective and to look creatively for new revenue streams. He set the direction for the Governor’s Task Force on Modernizing Transportation Funding in Idaho during the group’s organizational meeting in Boise.

Breaking ground on Idaho's future
Shovels turn ground for interchange reconstruction
Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter joined area business and civic leaders this morning to launch a project that will reconstruct the Interstate 84 Vista Interchange in Boise, improve safety, reduce congestion and create or sustain over 320 jobs. More than 100 people attended the ceremony and participated in the groundbreaking.

Events to launch eastern Idaho projects
Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter will join elected leaders, local officials and citizens on Wednesday, August 12, for two groundbreaking ceremonies on highway construction projects that will stimulate eastern Idaho’s economy, create jobs, reduce congestion and improve safety. An 11 a.m. groundbreaking ceremony at Rigby High School will mark the start of the Idaho 48 passing lane construction project. Also on August 12, a 1:30 p.m. groundbreaking ceremony will officially launch construction of the Interstate 86, Chubbuck Interchange to Pocatello Creek Interchange project.

Mobility
Public meetings planned on mobility management
Community members and leaders can influence public transportation options in eastern Idaho by participating in one of three meetings planned to help determine local community mobility needs. The meetings are part of a statewide initiative for mobility management that focuses on utilizing all modes of transportation including buses, bicycles and bicycle paths, carpools and vanpools.

Board proceeds with filling director's position
The Idaho Transportation Board is proceeding with filling the director’s position.
A recruiting announcement is being released this week.
The Board is looking for qualified candidates within ITD, Idaho, and the intermountain west.
It would like to name a new director before the end of September; however if necessary, that time frame will be extended to ensure hiring the right candidate.
Board Chairman Darrell Manning commended staff for its efforts to continue the department’s mission during this period.
“The Board believes the transition will have minimal disruption on the department and its dedicated employees’ efforts to meet the challenges of the Strategic Plan and Governor’s Executive Order,” Manning said. “We do not contemplate further changes at this time.” |
Board directs stimulus savings to U.S. 95 project
A two-lane, two-mile bottleneck on U.S. 95 north of Hayden will be expanded using $15.8 million in federal stimulus savings. The project will widen a two-lane section of U.S. 95, between Wyoming Avenue and the Idaho 53 junction to connect with four-lane segments on both sides. Widening the small segment of highway will create four continuous lanes from Coeur d'Alene to north of Garwood when construction is completed.

Midvale rest area experiencing rebirth
In 1987, the most recent version of the rest area at Midvale Hill on U.S. 95 was built between Cambridge and Weiser in Southwest Idaho. Two decades later, that rest area is being demolished and upgraded in a $1.4 million project. In addition to the existing restroom building, the caretaker facilities are being revamped.
