produces many successes, positions ITD for future
challenges
I have decided to retire from
Idaho state service, as director, with my last
official work day to be (today) Aug. 25. I have
recently been approached with two potentially
significant career opportunities and do not
feel it is appropriate to pursue these negotiations
while fulfilling my duties as director.

Board
approves Phase 2 of operations center
As the population grows and traffic volumes increase,
it has become necessary for ITD and ACHD to examine
methods and options for improving the effectiveness
of highway operations. An earlier plan recommended developing
a multi-agency Traffic Management Center, which generated
strong support. As a result, the transportation board
approved the addition of a Regional Operations Center
project, Phase 2, to the FY05 Highway Development Program.

Ceremony
formally kicks off Connecting Idaho
A steady stream of semi-trucks
passed along an isolated section of U.S. 30 last week
as transportation officials and guests assembled for the
formal launch of Connecting Idaho. Financed by GARVEE
(Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle) bonds that leverage
future federal funds, Connecting Idaho expedites highway
construction projects to counter inflation.

to school demands extra caution
Children have begun the annual pilgrimage
back to school after a three-month hiatus. Their presence
around schools and their journeys to and from schools
represents a challenge to motorists who share the roads
and streets on their daily commutes. The two competing
groups can coexist safely as long as both are aware of
the potential hazards and travel with extra vigilance.

annual NCPERS open enrollment period, from Sept. 1 through
Nov. 30. The Voluntary Group Life Plan is underwritten

to have team in women's run/walk/stroll
A five-kilometer run, walk and stroll, staged every September
in Boise, has become one of the largest events of its
kind in the U.S. The celebration was founded to inspire
healthy attitudes in participants so that it reaches their
families and communities. Every September thousands of
women and girls line up in downtown Boise to experience
Celebration camaraderie in a very supportive environment.

Patrols
to crack down on impaired drivers
If you drink and drive in Idaho you will be arrested.
That is the message state law enforcement officials,
ITD and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
want drivers to know as part of a crackdown on impaired
drivers before and during the Labor Day weekend.

Time is quickly passing to pick up a quick $50 bonus.
The State of Idaho Deferred Compensation program last
spring authorized a new incentive program that awards
$50 to the first 1,000 individuals who enroll in the deferred
compensation retirement program. To date, nearly half
of the incentive/bonuses have been awarded.

Administrative
assistant workshop set Sept. 14
Administrative assistants from throughout Idaho will assemble
at the Nazareth Retreat Center, 4450 N. five Mile Road,
in Boise Sept. 14 for the 18th annual Administrative Support
Workshop. The all-day professional development workshop
provides an opportunity for ITD’s administrative
assistants to learn how to do their jobs better, improve
relationships with others in similar positions and exchange
techniques for success.
