One-percent
salary increases to be given in October
Qualifying
ITD employees will join other state workers
in sharing the benefits of a strong economy
and 2005 budget surplus. The 2005 Idaho Legislature
authorized a 1 percent, one-time salary increase
for state employees (H395) if the general
fund balance exceeded $124 million on June
30. Estimates on June 29 placed the state’s
general fund surplus at more than $200 million.

Airport
name change honors founder
Elmore County has
a new airport. Really, an old airport with a
new name. As a result of Idaho Transportation
board action on Aug. 18, a state-owned airport
north of Mountain Home and about midway between
Boise and Fairfield, was rechristened the Smith
Prairie Downer Memorial Airport.

Motorists
reminded to use caution near schools
Many
look as if they had packed for a week-long hike
in the wilderness – bulging backpacks, lunch
bags and water bottles, jackets and tennis shoes…Their
footsteps or their bicycle rides lead not to recreation,
but school. Journeys that are presumed to be safe
are fraught with hazards when wandering minds
and commuting traffic merge.

Holiday
patrols to target impaired drivers
With
more people expected to be traveling on Idaho roadways
this Labor Day holiday weekend, law enforcement
will conduct saturation patrols to crack down on
drunk drivers.

Administrative assistants to assemble Sept. 8
ITD’s
administrative assistants will embark “On
the Road to a Bright Horizon” when they assemble
for the annual workshop Sept. 8 in Boise. The day-long
workshop includes seminars and presentations that
provide continuing education and networking opportunities
to employees from throughout the state.

McCall Fly-in participants show passion for flight
There’s
a saying that duct tape is the handyman’s
secret weapon. Add a Swiss Army knife to the arsenal,
and you’ve got the makings for a makeshift
airplane repair kit. Lothar and Hannelore Klingmuller
of Lakewood, Colorado had to learn about the emergency
took kit hard way.

Endurance
event to draw 1,000 bicycle riders
A bicycle race that began in 1983 with a
few college friends at Utah State University
will assume a commanding presence on highways
in southeastern Idaho Sept. 10. The LOTOJA
(Logan to Jackson) race will involve 1,000
riders and their families, beginning in
Logan, Utah.

to host national AASHTO rail conference
The
Idaho Transportation Department will welcome rail
passenger and freight authorities from throughout
the country beginning Sunday (Aug. 28) and continuing
through Wednesday for an annual conference on rail
transportation issues. The 39th annual Standing
Committee on Rail Transportation (SCORT) is a committee
of the American Association of State Highway and
Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

southeastern Idaho will be better prepared
to identify and respond to terrorist
threats or natural disasters as a result
of extensive training arranged by the
Idaho Transportation Department's Division
of Public Transportation.

Transit
systems in smaller U.S. communities
will receive clearer federal guidance
on emergency preparedness when the
National Rural Transit Assistance
Program (National RTAP) releases its
new DVD titled, “Threat &
Vulnerability Assessment for Rural
Transit” this spring.
