Board votes to submit $134 million GARVEE request
Following
a comprehensive report on the GARVEE program and staff
recommendations on options for continuing to move
it forward, the Idaho Transportation Board voted to
seek an additional $134 million in grant authorization
from the 2008 Legislature. The board voted to advance
that funding request at its monthly business meeting
Thursday (Sept. 20) in Pocatello.

DMV,
Correctional Industries introduce digital plates
ITD,
its Division of Motor Vehicles, and the Idaho Department
of Correction jointly unveiled four new license plate
designs – the first to be produced in a new digital
format – during a Tuesday news conference at Correctional
Industries. Sales began Tuesday (Sept. 24) for the Breast
Cancer Awareness, Idaho Historic Preservation, Elks
Rehabilitation Hospital and National Rifle Association
plates.

adopting the latest technology of digital “flat”
plates, making the transition from traditional embossed
plates. As a motorist, you will notice very little
change in the way you apply for and renew your standard
plates.

Collaboration leads to savings, completion of project

took a unique, collaborative route to reach a milestone
in the DMV Modernization Project recently, explains

Idaho
schools plan walk/bike day Wednesday
Bicycle
and pedestrian paths near schools in Idaho will be more
crowded than usual next week as children, parents, school
officials and civic leaders participate in the annual
International Walk to School Day. More than 30 schools
throughout Idaho are planning activities Wednesday (Oct.
3) as part of an international effort that will include
about 5,000 schools in all 50 states and events in 40
countries.

campaign encourages driving safely to work
The
first week of October provides an opportunity for employers
– including the transportation department –
to emphasize that workers take extra care while driving
to work. Drive Safely Work Week (DSWW) is an annual
week devoted to improving the safety and health of the
nation’s workforce by promoting safe driving practices
at their place of business. The campaign week is always
the first full week in October.

ATM machines provide customer, employee service
Commercial
truck drivers who wanted to pay for permits at the East
Boise Point of Entry needed to provide plastic –
either a Visa or MasterCard credit cards – to
conduct their transactions. Until this week. Installation
of new automated teller machines (ATMs) at both the
eastbound and westbound ports near Boise enable truck
drivers to extract cash to pay for fines and permits.

More
than 90 administrative support staff from ITD’s
six districts gathered Thursday (Sept. 27) for a day
focused on career advancement and gaining better perspective
on their contributions to the department’s success.
“Spread Your Wings” was the theme of this
year’s event, held at the Nazareth Center in Boise.

Former District Engineer Jim Clayton passes away
Former
ITD District Engineer Jim Clayton went to his rest Thursday,
Aug. 30, 2007, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center
in Lewiston. He began his career in Burley and eventually
moved to Lewiston in 1973, where he was promoted to
District Engineer, a position he enjoyed until his retirement
in 1993.

employees escape crash that claims truck driver
Two
District 3 employees escaped serious injury Monday
(Sept. 17) when a semi-truck struck the back of a
directional sign truck and then the back of a broom
truck that was engaged in maintenance activities on
Interstate 84. Shortly after impact, however, the
eastbound truck jackknifed and burst into flames,
claiming the life of its driver – Valeriy Morar,
40, of Pasco, Wash.

issues conditional green light for Sand Creek
After
an extensive application review, the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers (Corps) Walla Walla District issued a
draft permit, (Friday, Sept. 21), to the Idaho Transportation
Department for the Sand Creek Byway. The Department
of the Army draft permit was issued with conditions
to minimize impacts to Sand Creek and to mitigate
wetlands proposed to be filled for construction of
the project.

Holmstrom chosen to lead LHTAC
Former
ITD employee Lance Holmstrom, who has more than 17
years of experience in transportation planning, was
named the new administrator of the Local Highway Technical
Assistance Council (LHTAC). He replaces Joe Haynes
who retired earlier this month after 13 years with
the organization.

Beta
Sigma Phi-Grace honored for lD-5 cleanups
When
members of Beta Sigma Phi-Grace assembled for the
first time to clean the two miles of adopted highway,
they thought they would never reach the end. It took
three days to remove trash and litter between mileposts
409 and 411 on U.S. 30 in southeast Idaho’s
District 5.
