Communications Center reaches milestone
It
began with a vision to unite geographically diverse
Idaho through an interconnected communications system
that would coordinate emergency responses and make
travel safer for Idahoans. Three decades later, the
State Communications Center has evolved into a model
of multi-agency collaboration that is unmatched across
the nation. The center, located on the Idaho State
Police campus in Meridian, celebrates 30 years of
service this month.

guests help inaugurate new I-84 project
With
a backhoe excavator parked near the westbound lanes
of Interstate 84, Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter,
legislators, city officials and others gathered in
eastern Boise Sept. 27 to mark the start of major
improvements to the highway.The groundbreaking ceremony
on the Eisenman Overpass included Otter, Idaho Senate
Transportation Committee Chairman John McGee, Sen.
Elliot Werk, Idaho Transportation Board Member Monte
McClure, Nampa Mayor Tom Dale and others.

Ray Glidden has decided to hang up his headset. It is
safe to say that there is not an inch of Idaho that
has not attracted his gaze from on high.

Mark Young honored for aviation service
Mark
Young is not a pilot. The Oregon native drove logging
trucks, operated heavy equipment, worked as a commercial
vehicle inspector and eventually became manager of
Idaho’s Ports of Entry. But he has never operated
an aircraft. Then again, neither did his immediate
predecessor in ITD’s Division of Aeronautics.

Impaired driving campaign leads to 200 DUI arrests
Idaho
law enforcement agencies took advantage of overtime
assistance from ITD's Office of Highway Operations and
Safety (OHOS) and increased patrols to arrest impaired
drivers in August and over the Labor Day weekend. Preliminary
numbers show that the state police, along with county
sheriffs and local police departments across the state,
made 200 driving under the influence (DUI) arrests.

Re-enrollment of dependents dropped from medical/dental
coverage
The
Department of Administration, Office of Group Insurance
has worked closely with Blue Cross of Idaho and Delta
Dental of Idaho to implement legislation that extends
the age for dependent children to be eligible for health
insurance coverage to 25, if unmarried and eligible
to be claimed as dependents on your most recent federal
income tax return.

Board votes to submit $134 million GARVEE request
Following
a comprehensive report on the GARVEE program and staff
recommendations on options for continuing to move
it forward, the Idaho Transportation Board voted to
seek an additional $134 million in grant authorization
from the 2008 Legislature. The board voted to advance
that funding request at its monthly business meeting
Thursday (Sept. 20) in Pocatello.

Correctional Industries introduce digital plates
ITD,
its Division of Motor Vehicles, and the Idaho Department
of Correction jointly unveiled four new license plate
designs – the first to be produced in a new digital
format – during a Tuesday news conference at Correctional
Industries. Sales began Tuesday (Sept. 24) for the Breast
Cancer Awareness, Idaho Historic Preservation, Elks
Rehabilitation Hospital and National Rifle Association
plates.

ATM machines provide customer, employee service
Commercial
truck drivers who wanted to pay for permits at the East
Boise Point of Entry needed to provide plastic –
either a Visa or MasterCard credit cards – to
conduct their transactions. Until this week. Installation
of new automated teller machines (ATMs) at both the
eastbound and westbound ports near Boise enable truck
drivers to extract cash to pay for fines and permits.
