Why we prepare

Three recent events – one local and two national – underscore the crucial role that transportation plays in our daily lives and our economy. The devastation caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the interruption of travel on one of Idaho’s primary highways clearly demonstrate the importance of being prepared for emergencies or disasters.

Inspection turns up suspicious item under Rainbow Bridge
A routine inspection of the historic Rainbow Bridge near Cascade revealed a suspicious object hanging from the arch over the North Fork of the Payette River. Inspectors found a plastic bucket with copper wires extending from the sealed top under the bridge. It apparently was moved to the center of the bridge using an elaborate pulley system that was anchored with bolts in the structure.

ITD participates in Idaho Prepares conference
Preparing for emergencies and disasters is a long and arduous process, explains Bill Bishop, director of the Idaho Bureau of Homeland Security. Responders must think globally but act locally, he told a crowd of nearly 200 people assembled recently in Lewiston for the annual Idaho Prepares conference.

Board to hear about draft environmental policy
ITD staff will introduce a draft Environmental Stewardship Policy to the transportation board when it meets at Headquarters Wednesday and Thursday (Oct. 12, 13) in Boise. Staff members have been developing the draft policy and preparing a Context Sensitive Solutions Guide to aid the department in institutionalizing the policy.

Coming soon to a Web site near you: 511
If you’ve read recent Transporter stories about Idaho’s new 511 Traveler Information Service, you already know that 511 are the three simple digits travelers can dial to get winter driving conditions, weather reports, emergency road closures and traffic delays by phone. The same travel information will be available on line at 511.idaho.gov when the service launches in November.

Visiting delegation learns about ITD Driver Services
Even through the words of an interpreter it became clear Thursday afternoon that Idaho and the developing former Soviet block nation of Montenegro have some common driving concerns. How to ensure that drivers possess the necessary skills to safely operate a motor vehicle… that drivers should hold official driving credentials… that they carry adequate insurance… that they abstain from alcohol while driving…

Insurance open enrollment continues
There is still plenty of time to enroll in a supplemental life insurance plan through NCPERS (National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems). Until Nov. 30, ITD employees can add additional coverage during the open enrollment period. The next opportunity to enroll will be the next open enrollment period.

Botanical search wouldn't have found noxious weeds
As our nation celebrates the 200th anniversary of Lewis and Clark’s expedition across the North American continent, many have tried to imagine what these explorers found on their journey. As they crossed into a land we now call Idaho, it is certain that they saw many extraordinary things such as abundant wildlife, pristine lakes and rivers and a stunning array of wildflowers and native plants that scattered the landscape.
