Bomb
threat stalls buses, forces traffic to reroute
ITD crews and law enforcement officers
responded to a bomb threat Thursday that waylaid
two commercial buses, left passengers stranded
for several hours and forced motorists to
take a seven-mile alternate route. It was
the second time in three weeks that traffic
and commerce were interrupted by fears of
a bomb.

Governor's
safety summit to produce agenda for life
Leaders from throughout Idaho joined national
experts this week at Boise State University to
begin creating an agenda for life – a comprehensive
statewide strategy for reducing the number of
deaths on highways, roads and streets. In summarizing
the morning presentations, ITD Director David
Ekern challenged participants to define a safety
program and bring an investment plan back to the
transportation board

Board
receives report on new 511 system
ITD will take a major
step in helping motorists prepare for winter driving
conditions when it introduces a new 511 Traveler
Information service next month. The Idaho 511 team
demonstrated the new informative, user-friendly
system and explained how it can be accessed from
land-line phones, cell phones and the 511 Web site
(511.idaho.gov).

With the new 511 traveler information service to be
available soon to the public, a number of internal
reporting procedures will change. The new approach
to reporting procedures has evolved from input from
the Maintenance Steering Committee, staff from the
State Communications Center and ITD staff.

vigilance
How
do you remain safe while surfing?
Avoid shark-infested waters. That
same principle applies to surfing
the Internet as much as it does the
ocean. Stay away from the sharks who
are determined to steal your identity,
rob your bank account or lure you
to unwanted places. During this, National
Cyber Security Awareness Month, ITD
employees are encouraged to take basic
precautionary measures when using
browsing the Internet or reading e-mail

employees in the next few weeks. Some
are not sponsored or offered by the
department and may require fee payment.

employees begin 2005 Charitable Giving campaign
Disasters
don’t keep schedules. They don’t respect
geographic boundaries. They don’t care about
budgets. And they cannot be solved with sympathy
alone. Whether it’s hurricanes in the Gulf
Coast, flooding in New England, tropical storms
in Central America or an earthquake in Pakistan,
generosity of the more fortunate is needed to help
victims rebuild their lives.

Insurance
open enrollment continues
There
is still plenty of time to enroll in a supplemental
life insurance plan through NCPERS (National
Conference on Public Employee Retirement
Systems). Until Nov. 30, ITD employees can
add additional coverage during the open
enrollment period.
