New GARVEE Program Unit filling positions

Organization of the transportation department’s GARVEE Program Unit is nearly complete with the filling of several key positions, according to Nestor Fernandez, program administrator. Three ITD employees have been named as a nucleus of the GARVEE (Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle) Unit.

New office to assist with delivery of technology projects
A new structure for coordinating ITD’s technology-related projects has emerged as the Information Technology Project Management Office under the leadership of Don Bernaiche. The evolution began when Bernaiche joined ITD as a manager for a new technology project office to coordinate the department’s broad range of technology projects.

ITD's Freeman, Palmer compete at western 'Roadeo'
Robin Freeman, a veteran of district, state and regional competition for plow and heavy equipment operators finished among the top 10 in one of his specialty events at the annual Western Snow and Ice Conference and Snow Roadeo. Representatives from 16 western states, including cities, counties and state transportation departments, assembled for the competition Sept. 25-29 at Estes Park, Colo.

Facing a continuing loss of skilled and experienced workers through retirements and turnover, the transportation industry has recognized the need to recruit and retain new employees. If you ask ITD employees in District 5, planting the seed of a transportation profession can’t come early enough.

New rail lights to warn Boise drivers
State-of-the-art lights at a railroad crossing on heavily traveled Milwaukee Street in Boise will improve the safety of motorists and increase railroad efficiency, according to ITD and the Ada County Highway District. The red lights, built into new individual railroad crossing panels, are circular in design and are placed slightly above ground on the north and south side of Idaho Northern Pacific Railroad's track.

Turning squash into art
Artists with spray cans, precision carving instruments and a lot of imagination turned ordinary pumpkins into unique forms at Headquarters this week as a prelude to Halloween on Tuesday night.The creations were judged and then raffled off. Donna McRobert won the top-judged pumpkin created by Leann Otis.
