Monthly meeting begins with tour of MotivePower4
The Idaho Transportation board and ITD staff learned about new approaches to an old form of transportation during a tour that preceded the October business meeting in Boise. The ITD meeting included a tour of MotivePower. The Boise plant manufactures new commuter and switcher locomotives, provides locomotive fleet maintenance and service, and overhauls and remanufactures older locomotives for a variety of applications.

District 5
Community collaboration produces safe footing
Kay Jones looks across the American Falls High School campus at a half-mile ribbon of black and can testify about the importance of collaboration. The 10-foot-wide asphalt path connects the high school with Teton Street at the American Falls city limit. It is the product of multiple jurisdictions – including ITD’s District 5 – that were determined to eliminate what had been long recognized as a threat to student safety.

Randy Hirst knows how to make time fly
That old phrase…“What makes him tick”, comes to life for Randy Hirst. When this Rathdrum resident is not designing highways for the Idaho Transportation Department, he’s buried in his basement workshop… repairing clocks. For the past 10 years, Hirst said he’s been interested in repairing clocks that have given up a last tick.

Maack makes short transition in Office of Highway Operations and Safety
When the Office of Highway Operations and Safety (OHOS) began looking for a new highway safety manager the search didn’t to go far – only about 50 feet. Share Maack was recently appointed to the position responsible for overseeing highway safety office activities. Maack was previously an OHOS grants officer managing pedestrian, bicyclist and motorcyclist safety programs in addition to the office’s EMS grant program.

Charitable campaign touches hearts of need
Nicole Hansen was trapped by what appeared to be a hopeless family crisis. Subsisting on child support payments, she was desperately trying to provide for her two children, ages 7 and 5.She had reached the end of her options and didn’t know where else to turn. So she turned to the Salvation Army.

Employees have access to 'Well Connected' program
State of Idaho employees and their families now have access to Blue Cross of Idaho's WellConnected program.  Details about the program are included in the Fall 2007 Blue Cross member newsletter and the WellConnected information flyer, which have both been posted on the Employee Portal http://employee.idaho.gov/ and the OGI Website http://www.adm.idaho.gov/insurance/insurance.html .  In addition, Blue Cross is mailing a copy of the newsletter to employees' homes.

Among the most pressing challenges for Randy Kyrias a few years ago was navigating the congested freeways of southern California and managing a medical transport company. Eight years and about 900 miles later his greatest challenge is to help public agencies, rural cities and growing urban areas cope with the prospects of congestion similar to what he left behind.

A feature of ITD e-mail programs that previously was not available will be activated next month, enabling employees to let senders from outside the department know when they are out of the office.
