Although verifiable facts about our first Thanksgiving are few, they have proven fertile ground for myths, stories and traditions that have taken root over the past 386 years. Greater insight into our Thanksgiving tradition and our uniquely American spirit can be derived by examining events that occurred in Plymouth, Massachusetts, from the time a disparate group of entrepreneurs and religious dissenters landed that bleak December, to their famed celebration with a local Native American tribe a year later.

Administration
18-year history of efficiencies presented to board
ITD completed an extensive review of the way it delivers products and services and will continue to look for innovative ways to make operations even more efficient in the future. Idaho Transportation Board members reviewed a preliminary report on efficiencies that cover ITD operations from 1994 to 2012.

ITD’s extensive report on efficiencies is not the end of a process, but rather a major first step in what is becoming a standard way of providing transportation products and services. The department will use past achievements as a model for moving forward

Highways
ITD introduces improved 511 Web sites
Recent improvements to Idaho’s 511 Traveler Services Web site will help motorists become better informed about winter conditions on highways and make better travel decisions. Visitors to the Web site – 511.idaho.gov – will find two options. A low-bandwith site is provided for Internet users who access the Web through dial-up connections, and a faster version that uses higher bandwidths.

Fernandez named Roadway Design Engineer
Nestor Frenandez, who has helped guide Idaho’s largest-ever infrastructure program the past two years, today was named ITD’s new Roadway Design Engineer. He succeeds Damon Allen who left the position to become the District 1 engineer in Coeur d’Alene earlier this year.

ITD brochure clarifies outdoor sign regulations
A new ITD campaign will help property owners and businesses owners/operators avoid the headaches of having their road side advertising signs removed. The campaign, which includes a new brochure and Web design, will educate residents and business owners on what is allowed on property bordering state and federal highways in Idaho.

Employees

Dennis Glynn walks to top of fitness challenge
A record number of ITD employees took major steps – literally and figuratively – toward better health this year by participating in the department’s annual fitness challenge. Nearly every team stepped up with higher employee participation, according to a summary of the 2007 Idaho Centennial Trail challenge. The concluding report indicates 675 employees, representing every district and every division completed the 10-week challenge.

It is once again time for our annual NCPERS open enrollment where all benefited ITD employees have the opportunity to purchase optional term life insurance at group rates. New era of Practical Design brings many benefits;
District 2 receives first two design exceptions
Two projects scheduled to begin next year will do more than realign a highway and extend the width of travel lanes. They literally will help pave the way for a more streamlined approach to project design that bases decisions on the context in which the projects will fit.

Highway Safety
Campaign strives for safe travel for holidays
Working together to keep more families safe this Thanksgiving holiday, law enforcement agencies statewide and the Idaho Transportation Department will join in an enhanced seat belt and impaired driving education and enforcement campaign beginning Monday (Nov. 12). The goal of the combined effort is to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Idaho highways caused by impaired drivers and unbelted motor vehicle occupants.

'07 construction season winds down
At this point in the year, everyone in construction is crossing their fingers that the snow doesn’t start to fly and the temperatures stay warm, but it will be a battle to the end. While several small projects have dotted the highways of District 4 this summer, it is the major reconstructions that have received the most attention

Relay for Life generates revenue, new hope

I can list dozens of retired D-4 co-workers who have died from cancer. I can list numerous who are currently working with us that are fighting or have fought the cancer battle. A group of about 10 folks have decided that they can do something to help. The way to beat cancer is through research.
