Funding approved for two railroad crossing improvements
The Idaho Transportation Board last week approved funding for two railroad crossing projects in northern Idaho as part of a collaborative effort to reduce the 72 highway at-grade crossings in the corridor between Spokane and Athol. Idaho’s Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) includes an allocation of $5.6 million to improve the state’s railroad crossings.

GARVEE
Topaz bridge on its last legs
Removal of the old truss bridge continues as part of the Topaz Bridge replacement on U.S. 30 in District 5. During this GARVEE-funded project, the existing two-lane, five-span, 379-foot long truss bridge, spanning the Portneuf River, Marsh Valley Canal, and Union Pacific Railroad, will be removed. In its place will be a 4-lane bridge that will be 613 feet long, and contains 3.5 million pounds of structural steel.

Preparing for winter's wrath
Check highway, weather conditions before travel
ITD encourages drivers to take advantage of the 511 Traveler Services system as they plan holiday and winter trips. Idaho’s robust 511 system helps motorists make wise and safe travel decisions by giving them access to an array of condition reports before they leave home. Motorists can view highway conditions on more than 80 cameras strategically located throughout the state, check the latest road and weather conditions and quickly determine which routes offer driving challenges.

511 system improved to better serve motorists
Idaho travelers have new tools at their disposal as part of the Idaho Transportation Department’s commitment to continued improvement and evolution of the 511 Traveler Services system. The latest winter driving information is available on the Web at 511.idaho.gov or by telephone at 5-1-1. An array of weather information, collected by ITD’s Road, Weather Information System was added to the high-bandwidth and mobile (3G) sites last spring. It was added to the new low-bandwidth site unveiled in late October.

New features added to low-bandwidth site
ITD introduced improvements to the popular 511 Traveler Services website for low-bandwidth users this fall. Some of the new features were adapted from the more robust high-bandwidth site without sacrificing connection speed, which remains a major consideration for most users in Idaho.

Idaho pioneers exchange of trauma information
Drivers and passengers may never see one of the newest features added to Idaho’s 511 Traveler Services system. But if they’re involved in a severe crash, the program could mean the difference between life and death. Idaho’s 511 system is based on a coalition-driven, multi-state Condition Acquisition Reporting System (CARS), coordinated by Castle Rock Consultants.

511 site added for users of public transit
Idaho’s 511 Traveler Services website is among the few systems in the U.S. to incorporate a public transportation option for locating and tracking transit providers. The transit option was added early this year to provide links to local transit and bus providers using Google map technology that mirrors the other Idaho 511 web pages.

Highway safety
Enforcement campaign begins
Thanksgiving is a festive time for many that brings families and friends together, but it can quickly turn into a nightmare when loved ones choose to drive impaired. Using federal grant funds, ITD is partnering with Idaho law enforcement agencies to make state highways safer by funding education campaigns and high-visibility impaired driving enforcement patrols beginning Saturday (Nov. 20 ) and continuing through Tuesday (Nov. 30).
