Rearden rises to top of class in annual 'roadeo'
District 1 produced the top individual while District 3 finished as the top four-person team this week in the state Roadeo finals at the maintenance facility in Athol, north of Coeur d'Alene.
Mike Rearden finished nearly 80 points higher than his closest rival to win the individual title Tuesday (June 14). His combined score through driving events and the equipment knowledge test was 2,983. Rearden is foreman of the district's sign and striping crew. He placed second in 1996 and advanced to national competition at the Western Snow Fighters conference in Estes Park, Colo.
Two D-3 drivers – Kelley Dick and Jeramie Gregory – followed in second and third places with respective scores of 2,905 and 2,838. Dick is a member of the district's sign crew and Gregory is a lead worker from the Marsing maintenance section.
Their performance, along with teammate Robin Freeman (7th) and Kraig Spelman (23rd), combined to give D-3 the team title.
Competition includes precision driving (front end loader and snowplow/dump truck), a knowledge test and equipment trouble-shooting. Total possible points in the competition was 3,100.
