Supervisor: Wayne Hamilton - (208) 334-8456           ITD’s Asphalt Mix Laboratory is responsible for the Quality testing of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), used in highway construction throughout the state. The lab is fully AASHTO accredited, and all lab personnel are required to be Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC), and Superpave certified. The Central Lab also functions as a third party dispute resolution Laboratory when significant variation in test results between labs necessitate third party testing, and is responsible for qualifying all district and commercial labs in Superpave, statewide. ITD’s Asphalt Mix Lab is involved in on-going statewide and regional level research related to HMA, and HMA testing. The Asphalt Mix Lab conducts a full range of HMA testing including a multitude of tests associated with AASHTO R 35, Superpave Volumetric Design of Hot Mix Asphalt. Superpave, short for Superior Performing Asphalt Pavement, is a performance based Volumetric Design Specification, developed by the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), to improve the performance and durability of our nation’s highways. Our Central Mix Lab is fully functional as a Superpave HMA testing Laboratory.
