Board to consider plan to guide next 30 years

The Idaho Transportation Board will be asked next week to endorse a strategy that will help guide transportation initiatives through 2033.

Board members will consider adoption of a comprehensive visioning plan, Idaho’s Transportation Future: Getting There Together, that began two years ago and involved a cross-section of Idaho policymakers, transportation leaders and citizens. The board also will be asked to authorize ITD staff to develop implementation products and initiatives to support the vision document.

Patti Raino and Matt Moore of ITD’s Division of Planning coordinated the visioning process with CH2MHILL .

ITD staff members and consultants worked diligently on a document that will help shape transportation planning in Idaho and will replace a plan adopted by the board in 1995. Working closely with the metropolitan planning organizations, non-metropolitan areas, and Indian tribes, a new long-range plan has emerged. More than 750 people from the public and private sectors in Idaho were engaged in the process that included a statewide series of workshops, an opinion survey and a transportation summit in Boise.

Getting there Together contains the principles and priorities that will guide the transportation decisions of ITD and its partners. However, it does not include a financial plan. Additional information on the vision can be found on the web site: http://www.idahofuturetravel.info/

Also on the board agenda for the July 13-14 meeting in Twin Falls:

Information Technology Transition Report
ITD staff will update the board on the Information Technology leadership team’s Transition Management Plan. The plan was released July 1 and is available for review on the Intranet at http://intranet/ITTransition/
The next phase of the transition also will be reviewed with the board. The shape of ITD’s technology and information management will significantly change in the next few years to enable the department to remain competitive and provide better and faster service to its customers.

Mini-Cassia Transportation report
The board will begin its business meeting at the Red Lion Hotel at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday by considering reports from the Greater Twin Falls Area Transportation Committee and Mini-Cassia Transportation Committee.

Anticipated topics include the proposed additional Snake River Canyon crossing in the Twin Falls area; the City of Rocks Back Country Byway, which local officials would like to relinquish to the state; and problems with motorists blatantly running stop signs.

After meeting with delegates from those organizations, the transportation board will travel to the District 4 office in Shoshone for the remainder of its meeting.

District Tour
The board will conclude its two-day meeting with a Wednesday tour of the U.S. 93/Idaho 75 corridor that connects Twin Falls and Sun Valley.

A number of stops are planned along the way to meet with local officials, including representatives from the Blaine County School District, Citizens for Smart Growth, Peak Bus and the cities of Bellevue, Hailey, and Ketchum.

A brief tour of the Ketchum Area Rapid Transit facilities also is planned.
