Headquarters, District 3 honored
for commitment to alternative transportation

You’d expect to find people in motion at a transportation department. But ITD employees took it a step forward – literally and figuratively – in May during a campaign to promote alternative means of commuting.

Sponsored by the Ada County Highway District’s Commuteride, the campaign emphasized the need to participate in carpools, van pools, public transportation or walking and bicycling. ITD’s Headquarters and District 3 were named the top participant for agencies or businesses of its size.

Chief Engineer Jim Ross accepted a plaque from ACHD commission president John Franden and Boise Mayor Dave Bieter during an awards ceremony June 24.

Fifty-six Headquarters and D-3 employees participated in May in Motion. Of those, 10 sacrificed solo commutes to work by ride-sharing or travel in multiple occupant vehicles. Tammie Jauregui, who coordinates the van pool program for Headquarters, said ITD averaged 14.3 days per person (the average number of days the 56 employees commuted by some alternative form of transportation).

Since there were only 20 working days in May, that represents “a pretty impressive 71.5 percent of the commute trips possible for whose who participated.

Two ITD employees also won prizes in the Commuteride drawing, Jauregui reported. Lance Johnson and Deb Hall won two of the 33 prizes awarded. Throughout the Treasure Valley, May in Motion attracted 1,450 participants.

“It was great to have such a wonderful turnout for this event,” Jauregui said. “ITD employees should be the leaders n this type of program by the nature of our business, and it was a proud moment when we won. Thank you all for your support. I hope next year we have even more participation…”
