AASHTO audit subcommittee to meet in Boise

Transportation officials from throughout the United States will converge in Boise July 25-28 to discuss issues related to audits. The Idaho Transportation Department will serve as host for the 2004 AASHTO (American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials) Audit Subcommittee Conference.

The conference begins with informal activities on Sunday, July 25, including a golf event, an optional tour of the old Idaho State Penitentiary and the Idaho Botanical Garden, registration and an opening reception.

Formal sessions planned for Monday include welcoming remarks by Idaho Transportation Board Chair Chuck Winder and ITD’s Carri Rosti of the Internal Review section. Other Monday speakers include Ken Mead, who represents an inspector general for the U.S. Department of Transportation; and Max Inman, chief of the federal aid financial management division of the Federal Highway Administration, who will discuss the status of federal reauthorization of the transportation bill.

Also on Monday’s agenda are sessions related to quality initiatives, internal control frameworks at a Fortune 500 company, audit risk assessments and external audit relations with consultants.

The conference continues with a full schedule of presentations on Tuesday, July 27, including sessions by Kitty Pumphrey, a professor at Idaho State University, and Paula Williams, technical manager of information technology and internal audits at Albertsons.

ITD principal auditor LaVonna Smith will present an afternoon session on Information Technology Assessment. She is responsible for leading and participating in compliance, financial, operational and information technology audits at ITD. She serves on a number of department teams for compliance, data security and efficient and effective operations.

Smith has worked in ITD’s Office of Internal Review for eight years and is a certified information systems auditor and a certified internal auditor. Before joining ITD, she worked in the financial area of the Department of Health and Welfare, Sears credit research unit and Hewlett Packard as an information technology engineer.

Tuesday’s conference activities will conclude with a Basque dinner and tour of downtown Boise.

The conference will adjourn at approximately noon Wednesday following a morning business meeting.
