Warning: No Phishing Allowed ITDs Information Services has fielded several recent reports of e-mails that appear to be from CitiBank and are requesting personal or account information. IS advises these information queries are not legitimate e-mails, but instead are attempts at 'Phishing' to obtain personal or account information. McAfee should block these if you do click on the embedded link and may show this as 'EBScam'. Anyone who receives one of these emails should delete it without opening it. If you have responded to one of these before it was blocked you should contact the Help Desk or your district IT coordinator immediately to have your personal computer scanned for virus or spyware. Never give out personal information to anyone asking for it in an e-mail or requesting it through a web site unless absolutely certain of their identity and how the information will be used. What is a phishing attack? Phishing is a form of social engineering. Phishing attacks use e-mail or malicious web sites to solicit personal often financial information. Attackers may send e-mail from what seems to be a reputable credit card company or financial institution that requests account information, often suggesting that there is a problem. When users respond with the requested information, attackers can use it to gain access to the accounts. You can read more about the practice at: http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/tips/ST04-014.html |
