The Bottom Line

Public service announcement claims national award
A short video that drives home the importance of wearing seat belts was judged the best among entries in the National Transportation Public Affairs Workshop (NTPAW) that concluded Saturday (Aug. 14) in Denver.

Produced by the Public Affairs video crew of Dave Tuttle and Mark Hall, the video features a message by Darlene Root whose family survived a violent rollover automobile crash because they were all wearing seat belts. Darlene, her daughter, son-in-law and 2-year-old grandson were on a family trip in August 2003 when the crash occurred.

Daughter Jennie attempting to pass another vehicle on a two-lane road when the steering wheel began to shake. She lost control of the vehicle, which rolled 3-1/2 times before coming to a stop. All occupants (except Darlene, who was trapped in the back seat) walked away with only minor injuries.

The Idaho Office of Traffic and Highway Safety used the video and images of the crumpled auto to promote its “Click It, Don’t Risk It!” safety campaign. The message supports national statistics that point to significantly improved odds of surviving crashes when vehicle occupants use seat belts. The television spots featuring the Root family aired in every TV market in Idaho.

More than 30 states, including Idaho, were represented at the national workshop for public affairs professionals.

Annual Administrative Workshop Sept. 22-23
Door prize donations needed by Sept. 15
The 16th annual Administrative Workshop, which provides ITD employees an opportunity for professional development and internal networking, will be Sept. 22-23 in Boise. A dinner and reception will be held the evening of Sept. 22 in the East Annex conference room, followed by a full-day session at the Nazareth Center in west Boise.

This year’s event, Riding the Waves of Change, focuses on adapting to the changing work environment and developing the skills to successfully manage the constantly evolving workplace.

To make the workshop even more rewarding, organizers want to provide an array of quality door prizes. ITD staff members who would like to donate a homemade or purchased item, are asked to contact one of the following in Boise: Debbie Dugger, ext. 8555; Tammie Jauregui, ext. 8036; Evey McAdams, ext. 8084; Judy Rogers, ext. 8201; or Sue Higgins, ext. 8808. Donated items are needed by Sept. 15.
