Trip to Athens leaves ITD in better shape More than 500 ITD employees are breathing easier today because they are in much better physical condition than they were before heading to Athens. ITDs annual fitness challenge, created to encourage physical fitness through regular exercise, appropriately adopted an Olympics theme this year. Logging the hours spent in qualifying physical activity for a 10-week period took participants closer to Athens, Greece and gold medals. A record of 505 ITD employees completed their Journey to Athens and better physical fitness. Although the 10-week series finished July 3, many employees continue to exercise regularly. For some employees, the pursuit of fitness nearly became a half-time job. Jeff Brothers of District 3, logged the most time during the 10-week period, 179 hours, or an average of nearly 18 hours per week. No doubt he could hear the footsteps of his closest rival not far behind. Dennis Glynn, Headquarters Bridge Section, finished a few paces behind with 177 total hours. His journey was 28 hours ahead of John Gibson, Supply Services (149 hours), in competition among Headquarters employees. Mike Allen was third with 141. Statewide, District 1s Chris Hood placed third behind Brothers and Glynn with 155 hours. Nearly one-fourth of the District 4 employees (24 percent) participated in the summer challenge. Participation ranged from 19 percent to 22 percent in other districts. The greatest participation at Headquarters was by the combined sections of Bridge, Right of Way, Highway Safety and Public Transportation (56 percent). The range at Headquarters was 32 to 56 percent. All participants who logged at least 30 hours of qualifying activity during the fitness challenge received a certificate and their choice of a polo shirt or hat.
