Employees brush up on maintenance techniques
ITD maintenance employees in eastern Idaho received hands-on training Sept. 16 when District 6 served as host for the third annual Maintenance Fair. Approximately 100 employees from districts 5 and 6 attended the one-day event.
After a brief orientation at the beginning of the day, employees were divided into three groups that rotated through three morning sessions. Those groups also rotated through a series of three new afternoon sessions.
The six sessions were:

Winter survival and rescue

Right-of-Way fence and access

Truck-mounted attenuators

Clear zones
-
Noxious weed identification

New equipment demonstration
The intent is to introduce employees to new processes and equipment and to allow an open forum to exchange ideas, explains District 6 Assistant Engineer Brent Jennings. Both districts share a similar climate.
The morning session included winter survival and rescue techniques for workers who may become stranded in winter storms; a presentation by legal counsel regarding the importance of maintaining right-of-way fence on full-controlled access highways; and a presentation about the latest truck-mounted impact attenuators (equipment designed to absorb impact of a vehicle crash and protect crews working on the highway).
In the afternoon, the District 6 design section presented methods for determining clear zones. The District 6 vegetation crew provided a class on noxious weed control and identification of noxious weeds. The concluding session featured a demonstration of new equipment, including trucks with automatic transmissions, by District 5.
District 5 Engineer Ed Bala, Assistant District 5 Engineer Blake Rindlisbacher and Jennings teamed up to serve lunch. At the end of the day, District 6 Engineer Tom Cole presided over a prize drawing.
The Maintenance Fair has become an annual event for districts
5 and 6.
