Future of recreational airstrips focus of regional workshops

Idaho’s airstrips have long provided access to recreational opportunities, contributed to community development, supported fire and emergency operations, aided in natural resource management and more.

The Recreational Airstrip Symposium is a series of three workshops that will gather transportation officials, pilots, forest managers, outfitters and other stakeholders to help shape the future of how the airstrips are used, managed, maintained and improved. The workshops begin next week.

“Recreational use airstrips are gems among Idaho’s transportation system, and they represent a unique asset that we must plan for,” said Robert Martin, Idaho Transportation Department Division of Aeronautics Administrator.

Defining a strategy for the future of Idaho’s recreational airstrips is the central purpose of the workshops.

Ultimately, an action plan will be drafted to direct the use, management, maintenance and improvement of the state’s more than 40 recreational airstrips.

Sessions will be held in McCall (Oct. 19), Salmon (Oct. 21) and Worley (Oct. 26). In January, regional views will be brought together at a statewide summit.

The Symposium is held in association with the Idaho Aviation Association, Idaho Commerce and Labor, Idaho Outfitters & Guides Association, ITD’s Division of Aeronautics and USDA Forest Service.
