The Bottom Line

Course offered for defensive driving class
Employee Safety will present a course that leads to certification (or re-certification) for the Defensive Driving Course. Employees who drive state vehicles are required to take a Defensive Driving Class every three years.

This class will be Wednesday (Nov. 10) from 8 a.m. to noon in the District 3 conference room on Chinden Boulevard.

Those interested should complete an ITD-0733 Nomination for In-service Training form and send to Human Resource Development. For more information, contact Michelle Rowland at 334-8570.

Mail soon for holiday delivery
Rain, sleet and snow might not interfere with mail delivery, but deadlines can. Anyone wanting to send holiday greetings for arrival this year should note recommended mailing dates. The U.S. Postal Service recommends sending all parcel post mail to military personnel by Nov. 13. "Space Available Mail" should be sent by Nov. 27, Parcel Airlift Mail by Dec. 4, Priority Mail by Dec. 11 and First-class mail (letters and cards) by Dec. 11 (except for APO/FPO zip codes beginning with 093, which should be sent about a week earlier.

Generally, international mail should be sent the first two weeks of December. Global Express Guaranteed mail can be sent as late as Dec. 20.

USPS offers the following packaging tips:

  • Select a box that is strong enough to protect the contents.
  • Leave space for cushioning inside the carton.
  • Cushion package contents with shredded or rolled newspaper, bubble wrap or Styrofoam packing. Plain, air-popped popcorn also is good for cushioning – it's inexpensive and environmentally friendly. Pack tightly to avoid shifting.
  • Always use tape that is designed for shipping, such as pressure-sensitive tape, nylon-reinforced craft paper tape or glass-reinforced pressure-sensitive tape.
  • Do not use wrapping paper, string, masking tape or cellophane tape.
  • Put the delivery and return address on only one side on the package.
  • Place a return address label inside the package.
  • Stuff glass and fragile hollow items, such as vases, with newspaper or packing material to avoid damage to shock. When mailing framed photographs, take the glass out of the frame and wrap it separately.
  • Remove batteries from toys. Wrap and place them next to the toys in the mailing box.
  • Take packages that weigh at least one pound to the Post Office for mailing.
  • Purchase packaging products, including tape, envelopes, padded bags, corrugated boxes, mailing tubes and cushioning material from the Post Office. Some locations offer decorative boxes and expander packs that are suitable for mailing gifts.
