Know your weeds; new publication will help

Spring may seem a long ways away, but now is the perfect time to get ready to do battle against noxious weeds that will sprout up when spring weather finally arrives.

To do that, weed officials encourage Idahoans to get a copy of a detail- packed, 76-page Idaho Noxious Weed Guidebook offered free to the public by the campaign.

"The book is filled with helpful information about Idaho’s 36 noxious weeds. It’s perfect for people who want to help fight the battle against noxious weeds," said campaign coordinator Roger Batt. "The book has color photos of noxious weeds, plus detailed information about how to identify the different species of noxious weeds.

"Equally important, the publication also includes a special noxious weed control guide that will teach people how to control specific noxious weeds," Batt added.

People, especially newcomers to Idaho, often mistake invasive noxious weeds for Idaho native wild flowers or vegetation. The new Idaho Noxious Weed Book clearly identifies all 36 of Idaho’s noxious weeds and gives detailed descriptions of all parts of the plant to help pinpoint its identity.

"The battle against noxious weeds really needs to begin as soon as the weeds start sprouting in the spring. We believe this book meets the growing demand by the public for information about how they can identify and deal with noxious weed infestations around the state," Batt said.

Weed officials estimate that every year noxious weeds cost the Idaho economy approximately $300 million in damages. The state annually spends nearly $15 million to combat noxious weeds but still loses control of more than 1,000 acres of land every day to noxious weeds.

Copies of the book are available free of charge by visiting the Weed Awareness website at www.idahoweedawareness.org or by calling the Idaho Weed Awareness toll free hotline at (866) IDWEEDS, (866) 439-3337.
