Treasure Valley's transportation vision
continues to develop

Treasure Valley residents last week picked up where they recently left off – laying a foundation for the future of transportation in the region. More than 440 citizens from Ada, Canyon, Boise, Gem, Payette and Elmore counties turned out for the second round of Communities in Motion workshops, with the charge of designing their ideal transportation system of the future.

During the first round of workshops in November, participants were dispatched to small groups, each surrounding a large map of the Treasure Valley. Under the guidance of a facilitator they used stickers and markers to plot future roadways, rail lines, residential development, industrial development and main streets.

In last week’s second round of workshops, participants used an identical process to refine the scenarios that emerged from the initial round, with a specific focus on transportation. With a $1.25 billion budget, each group decided where their transportation dollars would be spent. Light rail, bypass road, new bus routes, expressway upgrades and new arterials were among their many choices.

Fregonese Calthorpe Associates of Portland, the regional and urban planning firm that designed and helped administer the process, will combine results from all of the workshops into one preferred scenario. In late March the public is encouraged to comment and provide input on the scenario at one of three open-house public meetings:

Communities in Motion is a six-county, 20-plus- year plan that will address issues related to a regional transportation system, evaluate the needs for future corridors and address the effects of growth on transportation.
