Bottom Line

ITD technology displayed at capitol
This fall the Idaho Transportation Department assisted the state coordinator for Help America Vote Act (HAVA) encouraging Idahoans to vote in the presidential election. ITD provided a link to the organization from its Internet site (itd.idaho.gov) as a way of enhancing the exchange of information. The Idaho Secretary of State office commended ITD for its role in promoting voter participation.

As part of the process, ITD developed a Web service (data connection) between the Secretary of State office and the Division of Motor Vehicles that enabled election verification in real time, explains ITD Webmaster Steve Jackson.

Considered a statewide leader in the application of online technology, ITD recently participated in Digital Government Day at the state capitol. The department demonstrated to legislators and county commissioners who were attending meetings in the capitol the capability of ITD technology projects. Included were video simulations and new Web applications such as the daily news tool available on ITD’s Intranet.

“We were well received, and the session was very well attended this year,” Jackson said. “Reggie Phipps (DMV’s Port of Entry/Special Permits section) has been to them every year and said this was the best she has experienced.”

FHWA publication to feature ITD photographs
Idaho’s pristine highway routes and colorful natural vegetation will receive national exposure this year thanks to the photographic abilities of several maintenance personnel.

Jack Gant’s photographs will be featured in the highlights page of a July 2005 Federal Highways Administration publication, announced Sherie Sweaney. His photo of Blazing Star flowers along Idaho 45 was among the ITD entries in FHWA’s annual photo contest. Cathy Ford’s award-winning picture of invasive mustard will appear in the highlights section of the November 2005 edition.

All ITD employees are eligible to submit photographs of roadside vegetation to be considered for entry in next year’s FHWA contest. Anyone interested in participating should contact Sweaney at 334-8465.

Blood screenings scheduled March 1 at Headquarters
ITD employees in the Boise area have an opportunity to participate in an extensive cardiac risk assessment Wednesday, March 1, in the Headquarters auditorium. The screening, which costs $22.50, is a service of the ITD Wellness Program.

Cardiac Risk Assessments are 14-channel blood screens that include tests for cholesterol (HDL and LDL), glucose, triglycerides, some minerals and enzymes. Anyone planning to participate should abstain from all food and beverage for at least 12 hours before the test. A doctor’s order is not required to have the screening.

Several other tests will be available, each at varying costs, during the March 1 screening. They are:

  • PSA (prostate specific antigens), $22.50
  • Complete blood count (white/red blood cells count) $9
  • Blood/lead (lead level in blood), $16
  • TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), $15
  • FT4-Free T-4 (hypo or hyper thyroid), $10.10, and
  • Iron, $8.50

A written doctor’sorder is required to have any of the additional blood work listed above. Please consult with your physician in advance to determine which (if any) tests are appropriate.

Contact Patty Fish by e-mail no later than Thursday (Feb. 24) to make an appointment.

St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center and Treasure Valley Lab will provide the screening services.
