Loop installed as president of the
Idaho society of professional engineers

Stephen Loop, QPL Program Administrator in ITD’s Materials Section, was installed as President of the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE) at its state convention in Pocatello in April.

In his inaugural speech, he addressed the need for greater involvement of the membership in the society’s programs as well as greater interaction of the state society with the various engineering technical societies in the state.

Loop also addressed the major issues he sees facing the society. These include the question of mandatory continuing education for re-licensure and the continuing requirement for the licensure of engineering professors who teach upper division engineering design courses. Loop will assume his new position on July 1.

ISPE is the Idaho state society of engineering professionals from all disciplines (i.e. civil, mechanical, computer, electrical, chemical...) that promotes the ethical and competent practice of engineering, advocates licensure, and enhances the image and well-being of its members.

Loop’s other professional activities have included:

• American Society of Civil Engineers: Southern Idaho Section History and Heritage Committee, co-chair, 2005; Pacific Northwest Regional Student Conference Concrete Canoe Competition Judge, 2003;

• Institute of Transportation Engineers, Transportation Planning Council, member, 1991-present; secretary/treasurer, Oregon Section, 1977, chairman, Technical and Membership Committees, Oregon Section, 1974-1977;

• National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE): Southwest Chapter ISPE MathCounts Competition, volunteer, 2000-present; ISPE Future Cities Competition, volunteer, 2005; Southwest Chapter, secretary/treasurer, president-elect, president; past president, and chapter director, 1999-2004; ISPE scholarship committee, chairman, 1990-1996; ISPE Professional Engineers in Government Practice Division, secretary/treasurer, vice chairman, and chairman 1985-1988; and

• Transportation Research Board, bicycling and bicycle facilities committee, past member.

Loop also has been involved in civic activities, having served on the board of directors for the West Valley Neighborhood Association since 1998 and as cochairman of the Five Mile & Ustick Neighborhood Center Planning Committee from 1998 through 2002. He is currently serving his second term as president of the association.

Other public service includes 10 years of service on the Boise City Planning and Zoning Commission, two years on the Boise City Design Review Committee, and assignments on the mayor’s task force on organic recycling and the advisory committee on solar access.
