High school junior takes unofficial ITD reins

Nicolette Jacobson probably didn’t realize when she began her trip to Idaho's Capital this week that she would be appointed director of one of the state’s largest agencies.

It was a little like trading places.

The high school junior from Irwin, about 50 miles east of Idaho Falls, became head of the Idaho Transportation Department briefly this afternoon, while Director Dave Ekern attended a transportation board meeting in Rigby, about six miles north of Idaho Falls.

Jacobson, who attends Ririe High School, was named honorary director as part of the Girls State program that introduces juniors to Idaho government. Students attend mock legislative sessions, learn how bills are introduced, debated and voted upon, and see first-hand the role state agencies play.

While at ITD this afternoon, Jacobson:

  • Toured the Division of Motor Vehicles and met with administrator Pamela Lowe
  • Learned how ITD sponsors and tracks legislative bills by visiting with Linda Emry of Budget, Policy and Intergovernmental Relations,
  • Discussed ITD organization and administration with Deputy Director Charles Rountree
  • Toured the materials lab with pavement design engineer Mike Santi, and
  • Discussed the public involvement process with Gwen Smith of the Public Affairs office

She also took her place in the director’s office briefly.

ITD provided a special retirement package containing department memorabilia to Jacobson before she returned to the Capitol.
