Visioning process gains AASHTO recognition

Idaho’s futuristic journey into the transportation needs of 2030 was more than an exercise in planning – it was a model of public participation.

A two-year process to identify the state’s transportation needs for a new generation of users recently caught the attention of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. It is selected as a “notable practice” in AASHTO’s “Best Practices in Smart Growth and Transportation,” competition.

“Idaho’s Transportation Future: Getting There Together,” under the leadership of Matthew Moore and Patti Raino, was one of three notable practices identified in “Creating Statewide Strategies for Integrating Transportation and Land Use,” joining New Jersey, Pennsylvania as award recipients.

California’s Context-sensitive solutions: Changing the Culture was judged the best in Institutional Change.

Four other projects were included as notable practices in the “Revitalizing Communities and Corridors” division. Maryland’s West Hyattsville Transit-Oriented Development Strategy was judged the best project and Vermont’s Interstate Interchange Policy and Planning Initiative was voted the best program. Projects in Colorado, Ohio, North Carolina and the District of Columbia were listed as best practices.

Idaho’s visioning process, which engaged more than 750 people statewide who represented both the public and private sectors, is captured in a two-page story with illustrations.
