ITD’s contributions to a calendar produced this month by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), found prominent places. A photo showing a mock burial of the last stop signal on Interstate 90 between Seattle and Boston is the first one displayed in the calendar, associated with January 2006. A second photo shows District 3’s Carl Main inspecting rebar along Interstate 184 in Boise. It is the featured photo for April. The entries were submitted to AASHTO as part of its project “Celebrate the Interstate,” commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Dwight D. Eisenhower System of Interstate and Defense Highway. Judged one of the best calendar/contest entries, the 1991 funeral photo also earned a $1,000 honorarium from AASHTO. While ITD Director Dave Ekern appreciated the offer, he returned the reward suggesting that it be used to help defray AASHTO costs of celebrating the golden anniversary. |
