Delegates from former Yugoslavia
study ITD Driver Services

Even through the words of an interpreter it became clear Thursday afternoon that Idaho and the developing former Soviet bloc nation of Montenegro have some common driving concerns.

How to ensure that drivers possess the necessary skills to safely operate a motor vehicle… that drivers should hold official driving credentials… that they carry adequate insurance… that they abstain from alcohol while driving…

A small delegation from the nation carved from the borders of former Yugoslavia toured ITD’s Division of Motor Vehicles to learn how to better manage its divers program. They were especially interested in how Idaho processes license suspensions and reinstatements.

DMV administrator Pamela Lowe welcomed the visiting delegation and Ed Pemble, who was ITD’s primary contact, provided an overview of the transportation department. Lynn Rhodes, Nancy Becker, Vicky Fisher and Tyler Zundel followed with details about specific Drivers Services functions.

Larry Plott, former director of the Peace Officer Standards and Training academy in Meridian organized the tour. He works under an international contract to provide law enforcement training in Montenegro.

Plott was accompanied by wife Marilyn (who coordinated the U.S. visit), Director Husnija Redzepagic; Deputy Director Tanja Tripovic; instructors Rajko Pekovic and Vesna Bultaovic, and language assistant Ljiljana Bojanic.

They visited the POST Academy and forensics lab, Ada County Jail, the Idaho Capitol, the Boise Police Department and the Ada County records and dispatch center. Their U.S. trip also included a trip to Yellowstone.
