Rainbow Bridge - Safe at home in Idaho

Attention to detail and quick intervention by two ITD employees recently prevented what could have been one of Idaho’s most serious cases of identity theft.

Without the actions of those observant employees, Idaho’s most scenic bridge would have been relocated from its perch above the Payette River and moved to upstate New York.

Upstate New York?

Right there near Niagara Falls, connecting the U.S. and Canada.

Very few would have recognized the bridge as an Idaho landmark. But Roxann Hansen and Dan Gorley did. And thanks to their efforts, the bridge is safe at home, nestled between forested hills in central Idaho, far from the international tourist destination. Here’s an account of their actions to keep the bridge in Idaho:

“After all of the attention the Rainbow Bridge has received this year, we thought it would be nice to inform you that it has again gained national attention,” they write.

“We were reviewing the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 2006 Bridge Calendar and noticed the bridge for December. The picture caption said it was the Rainbow Bridge between Niagara Falls, USA, and Niagara Falls, Canada. [That bridge] does not look anything like the Rainbow Bridge in Idaho.

“So, we e-mailed the chief editor, Alison Sweetser, at ASCE and asked her to check her Rainbow Bridge listed between Niagara Falls, USA, and Niagara Falls, Canada. We told her we thought the one pictured on the December calendar was in Idaho. She e-mailed us back confirming our suspicions and said she would fix the caption, which now reads ‘Rainbow Bridge, between Smith Ferry and Cascade, Idaho.’

“The Rainbow Bridge has, once again, made national attention. It made it into the ASCE 2006 Bridge Calendar and in the correct state.”
