Idaho’s new 511 travel information system awakened to an early Thursday morning snowstorm that complicated driving throughout most of the state. Although the wake-up call revealed a few technological challenges, generally the system responded well to the volume of calls, Web site hits and rapidly changing conditions. As expected, the first major storm led to a number of important refinements, most of which were in direct response to comments from motorists. Castle Rock, which is contracted to maintain the technology behind Idaho’s 511 system, responded quickly when revisions were requested. “This week’s snowstorm provided a good test of our new system, and for the most part, it performed well,” said ITD Public Information Officer Jeff Stratten. “Motorists helped us identify areas that needed to be improved, and changes were made in a timely manner. “We are committed to provide the most accurate, timely information available to the traveling public about highway and weather conditions. And we will continue to make improvements to the system as needs are identified.” To access travel information, dial 511 from telephones in Idaho, or visit the Web site at 511.idaho.gov. Calls from outside Idaho should be directed to 888-432-7623.
