Together we accomplished a lot in 2005

As the curtain falls on 2005, we can look back with pride on the distance we have traveled and look forward with anticipation to the road still before us. Among the things we accomplished together in 2005 are:

  • Legislative approval of the Governor’s Connecting Idaho initiative established an agenda that ultimately will produce a better, safer, more efficient transportation system.
  • Reauthorization of the federal surface transportation bill in mid-2005 gives us a solid, stable foundation for advancing the Connecting Idaho plan and gives us the resources to maintain and grow the present system.
  • We made significant strides in addressing the long-term financial needs of the transportation system by engaging leaders throughout the state in dialogue through the Forum on Transportation Investment.
  • A separate but parallel effort, the Air Transportation Investment Forum, seeks alternatives to address the unmet demand on Idaho’s airports and aviation infrastructure.
  • We initiated a new travel information system, 511, that makes real-time highway and weather condition reports available on the Web and via telephone. That information will better prepare motorists for safe winter travel and next year will advise them on highway construction activities.
  • In collaboration with local and state leaders, we joined the governor in making highway safety and the elimination of traffic fatalities our highest priority. The Governor’s Highway Safety Summit: Toward Zero Deaths will establish a plan for life.
  • The transportation department joined other state agencies in recognizing the financial needs of our employees and requesting resources to fairly compensate you for all that you do.
  • We have implemented a number of initiatives to make ITD more efficient and responsive.

These are your accomplishments, and you have every right to be proud of them. During this holiday season, when the emphasis is on giving, it is appropriate to recognize all the professional contributions you make to the transportation department and the citizens of Idaho. You have given tirelessly and generously.

On behalf of the Idaho Transportation Board and the ITD executive team, may you have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy the transition to a new year filled with great promise and potential.
