Port of Entry inspector dies in Jan. 27 crash

Ryan T. Johnson, an inspector for the Huetter Port of Entry in District 1, lost his life in a motor vehicle crash Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Johnson, a resident of Rathdrum, had been visiting family in Stites, south of Kooskia, over the Christmas holidays. He reportedly was returning to his job in northern Idaho when the early-morning crash occurred.

He was born at Cottonwood on Jan. 2, 1968, to Carl A. Johnson and W. Treese Wilson Johnson. He grew up in Stites and graduated from Clearwater Valley High School in Kooskia.

Following graduation, he attended the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. He sailed on the Coast Guard Eagle, a tall-masted sail ship that had no modern navigation equipment. The ship traveled to Australia, through wind, rain and hurricanes.

After returning from Coast Guard duties, Johnson lived a short time in Stites and worked in the logging industry. He then accepted a position with the transportation department at the Huetter POE and moved to Rathdrum.

He was a certified diver and bridge inspector and made underwater houseboat repairs.

Survivors include his father and stepmother Trudie of Stites; mother W. Treese Wilson Griffith and stepfather Jim Griffith of Payette, and several sisters and brothers.
