EEO conference planned in Post Falls

Prime contractors on ITD projects who use subcontractors that qualify under federal guidelines as Disadvantages Business Enterprises will benefit from a two-day conference organized by ITD in March.The conference is designed to explain the DBE program and recent changes.

EEO 2006 is organized jointly by the department’s Equal Employment Opportunity office and Human Resource Services (HRS). The conference will be March 7, 8 at Templin’s Red Lion Hotel in Post Falls.

HRS organized the first half of the conference, which is targeted primarily for ITD employees. Topics include:

  • The Power and Value of Diversity, by Sam Byrd of Diversity Works!
  • How to Recognize Racism and Sexism, J. Dallas Gudgell of SpeakEasy
  • Exploring and Recognizing Privilege, by Gudgell
  • The Dynamics of Power and Privilege, Gudgell
  • Dealing with Diversity Issues, Kelli Kinkela, Idaho Human Rights Education Center

The conference formally begins at 8 a.m. with opening remarks by L. Scott Stokes, ITD District 1 Engineer and comments from Human Resource Services Manager Mary Harker.

Contractors on ITD projects will find the second day of the conference especially beneficial. Karen Sparkman, ITD’s EEO Manager, and District 1 board member John McHugh will initiate the second-day schedule, followed by:

  • Building Effective Government & Business Relations with American Indian Tribes, by Larry D. Keown of LDK Associates
  • Presentation of EEO Awards by Sparkman and ITD Director Dave Ekern
  • DBE Issues by Lisa Wormington, Arizona DOT Civil Rights Administrator, and
  • Prompt Payment Recommendations, Fran Hood, ITD Associate Construction Engineer

ITD will present four awards (internal and external) recognizing outstanding contributions to the EEO process.

Cost for the two-day event is $75 (including lunch both days and two breaks), payable to the Idaho Transportation Department. Registration forms and payment should be sent to Revenue Operations, Idaho Transportation Department, P.O. Box 34, Boise, ID 83731-0034. The deadline is Feb. 17. ITD employees can register by completing a Nomination for Training form and securing supervisor approval.

Rooms are available at Templin’s under a special conference rate of $69 per night.

Attendees should indicate their participation in the EEO conference to get the reduced rate. Registration forms are available from ITD’s EEO office.
