ITD, interstate featured on covers
of state employee phone directory

ITD and the 50th anniversary of the nation’s interstate highway system will assume a prominent place on bookshelves and desktops throughout the state for the next year.

Idaho’s five interstates ensure citizens they are “within a few days’ drive of practically everyone else in our nation, altering our willingness to travel and the way we schedule our time,” according to a message on the back cover.

The formal anniversary of the national highway network is scheduled for June 29 in Washington, D.C. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the federal legislation authorizing the beginning of the massive highway construction effort.

“As the cover of this year’s director depicts, this year we mark the 50th anniversary of the federal law that brought America the Interstate Highway System. This 46,508-mile web of superhighways has transformed our nation and our economy,” writes Gov. Dirk Kempthorne in a preamble to the directory.

"President Dwight Eisenhower, the founder of our nation’s Interstate System once said, ‘Together, the united forces of our communication and transportation systems are dynamic elements in the very name we bear – United States. Without them, we would be a mere alliance of many separate parts.’

“Building the infrastructure for the state is extremely important. We’re bringing Idahoans closer together – whether it’s connecting them on the information super highway or via our state’s scenic and critical transportation byways.”

Distribution of the state phone directories began this week. The book contains nearly 500 pages, divided into 11 sections, and includes general information; agency listings; a list of cities, counties and school districts; legislative and judicial districts; commissions and boards; and an extensive list of state employees and related workplace information.
